Welded plate girders: the custom I-beam

Welding of built-up steel plate girders

When the rolled section your design calls for is unavailable, takes months to import, or simply does not exist in the required size, the answer is the welded plate girder: a beam built from three plates — two flanges and a web — joined by continuous welding. At Indumor we fabricate them to measure for structures and industrial plants.

Rolled vs built-up

Rolled sections come from the mill in standard sizes. A built-up girder is fabricated to the exact dimensions of your project: web height, flange width and thicknesses, each independent of the other.

Advantages of the built-up girder

  • Exact design dimensions: no oversizing because of stock limitations.
  • Variable sections: heavier flanges where bending demands it, lighter where it does not.
  • Availability: fabricated from plate stock, no waiting for imports.
  • Special lengths: girders longer than commercial bars, with controlled welded splices.

How we fabricate them

We cut flanges and webs by laser or oxy-fuel depending on thickness, fit up in fixtures that guarantee squareness, and weld continuously while controlling distortion. Then straightening and finish per spec, and dispatch together with the rest of the structural package.

Does your project call for sections you cannot source? Send the section and length list and we will quote the complete fabrication — with export shipping if needed.
