The Vicuña project: what it will buy, and when

Copper for seventy years.

That is Vicuña’s promise: the BHP and Lundin Mining joint venture combining the Josemaría and Filo del Sol deposits in Iglesia department, San Juan, Argentina, projects a mine life beyond 70 years and an average of 395,000 tonnes of copper a year over its first 25. In June 2026 it entered the RIGI incentive regime with a US$9.737 billion plan — the first copper project granted 40 years of stability. The geographic irony is that Argentina’s largest mining project faces the Pacific: port, desalination plant and aqueduct sit on the Chilean side. For a fabricator, the useful move is to read the project along a timeline.

Before construction (2026)

Detailed engineering is under way, the access road is being upgraded and the camp is expanding, with tenders such as the 33 kV power distribution. The final investment decision on stage one is expected before year-end. This is registration season: the project works with 245 suppliers, 150 of them from San Juan, and requires bidders to be qualified on its supplier platform.

During construction (stage one)

The Josemaría pit and a sulfide concentrator, with around 5,500 direct jobs on average. This is peak steel demand: structures for crushing, grinding and flotation, hoppers and chutes, conveyor steelwork and kilometers of platforms and stairs, plus the diesel tanks that fuel the fleet.

And all of it has to get there. Access to the Batidero camp is a road of about 200 kilometers that leaves Guandacol, in La Rioja province, and climbs above 4,000 meters, with mountain stretches and winters that complicate traffic. That shapes how things get fabricated: parts broken down to truck dimensions, assemblies pre-fitted and tested in the shop, bolted joints where on flat ground you would weld, and lifting points designed in from engineering. What takes an hour to fix in a Córdoba plant can cost a full day of crane, crew and wind at that altitude.

What should a supplier have ready? Current registrations, qualified welding procedures, material traceability and plant capacity that can be shown on a visit. Large packages move fast once the investment decision is made.

After: operations and new stages

Stage two adds an oxide plant with solvent extraction and electrowinning at Filo del Sol; stage three brings expansions, a desalination plant and a concentrate pipeline. In parallel comes a mine’s steadiest demand: wear liners, spares and structural maintenance for decades.

The provincial picture is in San Juan mining, project by project, and the investment framework in Argentina’s RIGI explained for suppliers. At Indumor we fabricate from our own plant in Córdoba, one truck-day from San Juan, and quote in English.

Next time you see “Vicuña” in a headline, check which stage it is in: each one opens a different shopping list. If you want in on the next one, write to us before the bid package lands.
