IPE beam table: dimensions, weight and properties

Updated November 2, 2026  ·  Indumor

IPE beam cross-section with dimensions: depth h, flange width b, thicknesses tw and tf, root radius r, plus a side view of one meter of bar

Why pay for kilograms that do no work? An IPN 200 and an IPE 220 weigh the same, 26.2 kg per meter. The IPE is 18 % stronger in bending and 29 % stiffer, because it puts the steel in better places: a thin web and flanges of even thickness.

Here are the eighteen sizes in the series, from IPE 80 to IPE 600, with the weight and the properties used in design.

These are the nominal values of the IPE series in the European standard EN 10365, with tolerances to EN 10034; in Argentina the series appears in IRAM-IAS U 500-215-5. We checked them against catalogs based on the 2017 edition of EN 10365; a new edition came out in July 2026 which, according to DIN, adds sizes. Weight is the area times the density of steel, 7.85 kg/dm³.

Four things to know before ordering

  1. The flanges are parallel. There is no inner slope, so a bolt seats square without a taper washer, and welding a plate on is simpler than on an IPN.
  2. The series skips sizes. After IPE 240 comes 270, then 300, 330, 360 and 400. Ordering an IPE 280 is whistling in the wind; if one shows up on a drawing, ask which section was meant.
  3. It is weak sideways. For the IPE 300, the weak-axis inertia is almost fourteen times smaller than the strong-axis one. As a beam with its compression flange braced it performs very well. As a long column, an HEA usually does better.
  4. It is a child of the universal mill. Even-thickness flanges come from a mill with horizontal and vertical rolls, the one Henry Grey started up in Differdange, Luxembourg, in 1902. Those first beams still had a 9 % slope. The IPE series was fixed in Europe in 1957, with Euronorm 19-57.

In Argentina it is sold in 12 m bars, usually in grade F-24, and several distributors list it as imported, so check stock before finalizing a drawing.

Next time you review a takeoff, check which beams are still IPN out of habit. Moving them to IPE often cuts weight without losing strength, and on a large structure that shows in the final numbers. At Indumor we build steel structures from lists like this one, with the sections cut, drilled and welded.
