Fixed ladders

Caged fixed ladders climbing to platforms in an industrial plant

Little use, high risk

“We hardly use that ladder,” the person who calls us almost always says. True: hardly, and nearly always with one hand busy, at night, because there is a stuck valve up top. It is the ladder nobody looks at until the day someone has to climb it in a hurry.

At Indumor we fabricate fixed ladders for building roofs, tanks, silos, platforms and pits: with a cage or with a rail for a ladder safety system, rest platforms and an exit gate, made to measure.

Quote a ladder

Before, during and after

Before: deciding right

First, whether a fixed ladder is the right answer at all: if someone will climb it every day carrying tools, what you need is a 45° stair. Then, fall protection. Under OSHA 1910.28, fixed ladders that extend more than 24 ft (7.3 m) need it, and on ladders installed since November 19, 2018 it has to be a ladder safety system or personal fall arrest: a cage alone no longer counts, and from November 18, 2036 that applies to every fixed ladder. In Argentina, Decree 351/79 calls for back protection from 2.25 m and rest platforms every 9 m on service ladders. At the top, always, a self-closing gate.

During: the dimensions

  • Clear width between side rails: 16 in (41 cm) minimum under OSHA 1910.23; Argentina asks for 45 cm.
  • Rungs: uniform, 10 to 14 in (25 to 36 cm) apart, center to center; solid round bar of 3/4 in or more is common.
  • Clearance behind the rungs: 7 in (18 cm) to the nearest object, so the whole foot fits.
  • Climbing side: 30 in (76 cm) clear from the rung centerline on ladders without cages.
  • Exit: side rails or grab bars extending 42 in (1.1 m) above the landing, to hold on while stepping off.

Brackets to the structure run the full height, and outdoors the ladder is hot-dip galvanized.

After: inspecting it

Once a year: rungs, welds, cage hoops and anchors. And when a section is replaced on a site that follows OSHA, the new section has to carry the ladder safety system.

What we need to quote it

  • Total height and where it lands: roof, platform, tank or pit.
  • Fall protection: cage or ladder safety system, per the standard you are held to.
  • Photos or a drawing of the base and the landing.

Frequently asked questions

Under OSHA, when it extends more than 24 ft (7.3 m) above a lower level. On ladders installed since November 19, 2018, that protection has to be a ladder safety system or personal fall arrest, not just a cage.
A cage keeps someone from falling backward, but it does not stop a fall if they let go: they slide down inside it. A ladder safety system does stop it, because the worker climbs tied off with a harness. That is why OSHA stopped accepting cages on new ladders.
Between 10 and 14 in (25 to 36 cm), center to center, and the same spacing throughout the ladder, per OSHA 1910.23.

Is there a plant shutdown on the calendar?

That is the time to replace fixed ladders or bring them up to standard: it gets done while the plant is down. Request the quote early. Or email tecnica@indumor.com.
