Hopper and silo design: making material flow

Grain storage silos and hoppers

Hopper: a funnel-shaped vessel that receives bulk material at the top and delivers it at the bottom. That is the theory. In practice, a badly designed hopper is a funnel that does not funnel: material hangs, bridges, and someone ends up beating it with a sledgehammer — the most practiced and least advisable "maintenance" in the industry.

At Indumor we fabricate hoppers for agriculture, mining and industry, and 90% of flow problems are avoided with these design decisions:

  • Discharge angle per material: dry grain flows on 45° walls; flour, damp pellets or fine aggregate demand 60° or more. Copying the neighbor’s hopper without checking the material is the recipe for bridging.
  • A generous outlet: every material has a critical diameter below which it arches. Saving on the outlet means paying in hammer blows.
  • Smooth walls and clean joints: every protruding weld bead, every bolt poking inside, is a snag point. Internal welds ground flush.
  • The right gate or valve: slide gate for clean shutoff, butterfly for regulation. And accessible — maintenance day should not be an expedition.
  • Plan for the impact: a reinforced impact zone or bolted sacrificial liner where the material lands, for quick replacement.

Next time you see someone hammering a hopper, you will know: that is not maintenance, that is a design error crying for help. If you have a hopper that hangs or need a new one, tell us what material you move and we will design and fabricate it to flow on its own.
