Laser cutting: how it works and when to use it

Industrial gantry laser cutting steel sheet

Laser cutting is today’s most precise and versatile method for cutting sheet metal. A concentrated beam melts the material along the exact path of your drawing, with a minimal kerf and clean edges that rarely need rework.

How fiber laser works

Modern machines use fiber lasers: the beam is generated in optical fiber and focused on the sheet by a CNC head that follows the programmed contour. The result is fast, repeatable cutting with tolerances in tenths of a millimeter — on part 1 and on part 1,000.

Advantages over plasma and shearing

  • Precision: complex contours, small holes and exact tab-and-slot features plasma cannot match.
  • Edge quality: clean, burr-free edges with no burn zone; parts go straight to bending or welding.
  • No tooling: change the design by changing the file — no die cost. Ideal for prototypes and short runs.
  • Material usage: nesting software packs parts tightly on the sheet, cutting waste and your cost.

When it pays off

Whenever you need precision, complex shapes or repeatability: machine parts, self-fixturing weldments, decorative work, production series. For simple straight cuts in heavy plate, shearing or plasma can still make sense — our laser cutting service advises case by case, because we run every technology in the same plant.

Preparing your file for a quote

Best case: a DXF or DWG with contours at 1:1 scale. Only have a PDF or a sketch? We redraw it. Tell us the material (carbon, stainless or galvanized), thickness and quantity, and we quote per unit and per run — with export shipping if you are abroad.
