Piping: shop-prefabricated vs field-assembled

Welding of industrial piping

Every pipe run can be built two ways: cut and weld stick by stick in the plant, or prefabricate spools in the shop and deliver them ready to bolt up or close with minimal field welds. At Indumor we push the second path whenever possible, and the numbers explain why.

A field hour costs 2-3 shop hours

Field work means heights, scaffolding, work permits, tight spaces and production running around you. In the shop, the same weld happens in a comfortable position with the pipe turning on a positioner. Fewer hours and cheaper hours: double savings.

Quality: welding in rotation always wins

Shop welding in flat position is visually and technically superior to fixed-position field welding. Where radiographic inspection applies, shop rejection rates are significantly lower.

Shutdowns get days shorter

The classic: replacing a line during a shutdown. If spools arrive prefabricated and verified, the shutdown is strip out and fit up. If you fabricate in the field, every hiccup runs against the clock of stopped production.

When field work makes sense

Field work never disappears: closure welds, fit-up against existing equipment, whatever the survey could not see. The healthy ratio: 80-90% of welds in the shop, the rest in the field. That demands a good survey up front: we measure in plant, detail the spools, and they fit first time.
